Designer Tom Hedqvist

“My first trip to Japan was in 1970 to Expo 70’ in Osaka. During an excursion to Kyoto, I bought a bookmark with a stamp depicting a cute little bird. It had its head turned, looking straight at me. I used it for several books and eventually I started sketching a pattern of the bird. It ended up being my first textile pattern for the newly formed group called 10 Swedish Designers, and I named it Kyoto. Despite so many years passing, I’ll never forget my little Japanese bird.”

Ten Swedish Designers

The 10 Swedish Designers group started in Stockholm in 1970, and their graphic, bold and playful patterns still feel relevant today. When the group stopped in 2015, IKEA acquired this fantastic patterns treasure to be able to spread them around the world. The graphic dots of Ingela Håkansson Lamm’s Ciao pattern and Tom Hedqvist's playful birds in the Kyoto pattern are two examples. Both Ingela and Tom were involved from the start and during all the years the group was active.
